Chapter 06 – The Resolution
Tezuka slumped ever so slightly in his chair as his grandfather glared the famous Tezuka-glare, demanding an answer from his grandson.
“And sit straight, Kunimitsu,” his grandfather corrected out of habit.
Tezuka straightened on reflex and manfully ignored the snickering he heard from his side. He didn’t see what Atobe found so amusing, considering the Hyotei diva was about to be embarrassed along with him.
“I thought I could change your mind regarding the engagement, Grandfather,” Tezuka respectfully addressed his explanation into the table in front of him, keeping his eyes fixed on the coffee cup. Despite not looking up, he could feel the waves of frustration emanating from the older man.
Kunikazu frowned. It wasn’t like his grandson to prevaricate when he disagreed. But then again, his grandson rarely disagreed.
“If you’re uncomfortable with marrying Minako-chan, you could have said so, Kunimitsu,” Kunikazu admonished the boy in front of him.
I said so the first time I met Minako-chan but you ignored me, Tezuka wanted to point out. However, he remained silent and nodded.
“And it was irresponsible of you to drag poor Kei-chan into this mess,” Kunikazu continued with his reprimand, waving at Atobe vaguely. Tezuka could feel Atobe stiffening beside him, whether out of indignation at the diminutive or concern for potential exposure, he wasn’t sure.
Instead of saying anything, Tezuka merely continued nodding, feeling like a bobble head doll that was so popular on personal cars in the early 90’s.
“What’s more,” Kunikazu continued, clearly now getting into the role of the lecturer, “you’ve put your friend’s reputation on the line. What if someone had saw you and Kei-chan together? The rumors alone would have ruined her reputation. Not to mention the school would have suspended you for improper behavior.”
Tezuka winced at the thought. He’d been so intent on setting up a convincing act that he hadn’t considered the consequences had any of this gotten back to the administration. Thinking about it now, however, he was infinitely glad his grandfather had discovered the truth as early as he did.
Or as much as the fact as Tezuka was willing to admit to at this point.
“Not to mention the Atobe family would not be pleased to know that their son has been cross-dressing.”
At this, Tezuka’s gaze snapped up in horror. Next to him, he could feel Atobe reacting similarly.
Seeing the two boys were sufficiently regretful of their actions, if the way Atobe was now openly glaring at Tezuka was anything to go by, Kunikazu sighed and decided to alleviate some of their anxiety.
“I would suggest, Kei-chan, that you sneak home and never speak of this incident again. If all of us present keep our mouths shut, with luck, none of this will get back to your parents,” Kunikazu advised.
To both Tezukas’ surprise, Atobe stood up quickly and bowed, demurring a soft “Arigato gozaimasu” and took his leave, Kabaji still following as a hulking shadow.
“Now, you and I need to have a long talk, Kunimitsu,” Kunikazu focused his attention back to his grandson, who had, during the dressing down, slouched back into his seat. “Come to the dojo and we’ll finish this over tea.”
“Hai, Grandfather.”
