[public post] Do you ever get the feeling...?

Okay, I'm bitching about fanfic. But I hate it when I'm reading something that's fairly well written (especially coming from a fandom that is filled with about 90% troll fic - as in, someone clearly is abusing the English language but for some reason won't stop) and then I start finding the characterizations going down a road that I can see coming and don't like at all. Especially since I feel the disturbing urge to point out all of the character's previous actions to the author and demand if she realizes that the character she's writing is acting like a shithead and if she's going to have anyone call him out on it. Because from where I'm standing?

It looks like the author is being overly sympathetic to douchey behavior and not in the good way. I will be seriously disturbed and upset if the character turns out to be "oh so misunderstood", because he's just a pure douchebag so far.

I'd like to think that the author can pull this off, but I've read one too many fanfic and published stories that involve the author making excuses for her douchebag character. It certainly doesn't help that said character is an asshole in canon and I'm beginning to suspect the writer is one of the character's apologists.

Now I'm torn between finish reading the story for some closure or pulling out while I can before I get thoroughly disgusted with the character. Bleh.
